HOMEWORK - Complete Question 1B - Media Language using Andrew Goodwin and others

Make sure you complete your Media Language essay on your blog this week.
When writing about your music video you are best to start with a Goodwin quote - see above.

Now try to find examples from your work to exemplify his theories.

Use my Revision sheet to add in more theorists such as Rick Altman and Steve Neale's ideas on Genre; Blulmer and Katz's Uses and Gratifications for the Audience; Roland Barthes' Myths and Levi Strauss' ideas on Binary Oppositions.

See below for some more help on Blulmer and Katz.

HELP FOR HOW TO ANSWER QUESTION 1A

What are the social implications of different media representations of groups of people?

This is taken from Dave Harrison's excellent guide on how to answer this question effectively.

1) If we apply a basic effect model to the representations of youth, particularly the negative ones there could be detrimental implications. (Also some interpretations of the work of theorist Althusser believe that the power of the mass media resides in their ability to place a subject in a way that their representations are taken to be reality.)

If representations of youth seen in Eden Lake and Harry Brown are not decoded as being a selective representations then it could result in creating or perpetuating stereotypes (commonly held public belief about specific social groups, or types of individuals).

This could then lead to creating distance between social groups - which could in turn lead to ignorance and more fear.  So adults (particularly vulnerable ones) will become afraid of today’s youth, will be reluctant to engage them and demonise them instead. It can also create tension within social groups with young people becoming afraid of other young people

Evaluation of Practical Work - Audience Question

This is from the exam board - TAKE NOTE IF YOU WANT AN A GRADE!

The practice of students giving out questionnaires and putting all the returned examples in their evidence has been discouraged for a long time. The main problem with this approach is not the survey method per se but the limited nature of the questions and the claims made for the responses. For example, asking ten fellow students their favourite genre of film, finding that seven out of ten say ‘horror’ and then using that to justify making a horror film opening as a result. Audience research is more productive if it addresses the following:

·      What do real audiences consume?

·      Who are the specific audiences for particular products?

·      How do media industries target those audiences?

Those questions require research of a different kind to the local questionnaire method; initial research online looking for data about the industry students are dealing with, such as box office figures for films or circulation figures for magazines would be a good starting point. Part of research involves looking for examples of how marketing works across a range of media- for films this includes considering posters, trailers and their selling points, for example.

Later audience research should be considered in a series of stages, each involving formative qualitative feedback. So, for example:

·      Pitching the product to the rest of the group and taking feedback, noting the responses from this and deciding how to act as a result.

·      Showing early drafts of the work (such as an animatic of the storyboard or a mock up front cover) and asking some carefully framed questions about them to get a sense of the audience’s understanding of the product rather than just a measure of whether the audience liked it.

·      Taking peer feedback at later stages and then again on the finished product; asking things like “can you tell me what happened in that sequence, what the relationship between the characters is and what do you think will happen in the rest of the film?” to look for audience readings of the work. ‘

These approaches can be presented in a variety of ways- video extracts with framing commentary from the makers; audio, written. All would help move away from the pie chart of responses model which tends to be fairly unproductive.

Digipak - Exam board advice

If you look up digipak on wikipedia, you'll see it contains four or six frames. There are loads of examples on play.com and several linked to this the exam board's advice blog below which gives examples of excellent candidate blogs. This one contains a digipak which is very well constructed and comprises six panes. Scroll down to find it.

Exam board clarification on sizing etc

They definitely want you to include most of the following (which are codes and conventions of real digipaks as opposed to CD covers):

  • Front
  • Spine
  • Back
  • Membership postcard/flier
  • Lyric section
  • Disk impression
  • Band info section/booklet
  • Free image/poster

REALLY IMPORTANT - MUST BE UPLOADED TO YOUR BLOG

For the music video, candidates need to show evidence they have sought permission to use the track - no more than that, e.g. a letter or fax to the artist/label concerned. Other non- original material may only be used in a limited way.

eg. if your track was by Katy Perry, you would do the following:

Metamorphosis Music is an American record label owned by Capitol Records and founded in 2014 by singer Katy Perry.  This is a screen grab of their website to use to contact them.

Just email a request and then screen grab your email and put it onto your blog.  You only need to ask for permission for educational purposes for your A Level Media Studies coursework.  You do not need to evidence the reply, although it would be great if you do get one!

How to get the top Level 4 in your digipak

  1. Level 4

The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:
    • awareness of conventions of layout and page design
    • awareness of the need for variety in fonts and text size
    • accurate use of language and register
    • the appropriate use of ICT for the task set
    • appropriate integration of illustration and text
    • framing a shot, using a variety of shot distances as appropriate
    • shooting material appropriate to the task set; selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting
    • manipulating photographs as appropriate, including cropping and resizing

If you have worked in a group, an excellent contribution to construction is evident.  Be clear about what EXACTLY you did.

How your website is marked - to get a Level 4
