HOMEWORK FOR MONDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER

Following today's lesson on the lovely Ms Swift, please make sure you write up your analysis of her star persona as featured in the music video for You Belong With
Me.

This must be uploaded onto your COURSEWORK BLOG using your class notes.

You must also compare this star image with another artist targeting a different audience from Taylor so that you evidence original research into the marketing of music artists.

HOMEWORK DUE NEXT MONDAY.

Here is the link to the video we watched:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw

Here are the questions we discussed today that you should be answering in your analysis:

  • Is the music video based in real life, or does this take place in a fantasy world?
  • Is the way the artist is portrayed in the video really how that person dresses and acts in real life?
  • Consider how the musician is dressed - is that how regular people dress?
  • Consider the actions taken by the artist in the video - would they really do these things in real life?
  • What is the benefit for the musician to portray him or herself this way?
  • Does the video portray people in stereotypical ways? Are these reflections of real people or are they just one-sided characters?
  • Consider the editing - how does the frequency of cuts from shot to shot affect how you feel about the video?
  • Consider the setting - why did the director choose this location or setting?

Digipak - Exam board advice

If you look up digipak on wikipedia, you'll see it contains four or six frames. There are loads of examples on play.com and several linked to this the exam board's advice blog below which gives examples of excellent candidate blogs. This one contains a digipak which is very well constructed and comprises six panes. Scroll down to find it.

Exam board clarification on sizing etc

They definitely want you to include most of the following (which are codes and conventions of real digipaks as opposed to CD covers):

  • Front
  • Spine
  • Back
  • Membership postcard/flier
  • Lyric section
  • Disk impression
  • Band info section/booklet
  • Free image/poster

REALLY IMPORTANT - MUST BE UPLOADED TO YOUR BLOG

For the music video, candidates need to show evidence they have sought permission to use the track - no more than that, e.g. a letter or fax to the artist/label concerned. Other non- original material may only be used in a limited way.

eg. if your track was by Katy Perry, you would do the following:

Metamorphosis Music is an American record label owned by Capitol Records and founded in 2014 by singer Katy Perry.  This is a screen grab of their website to use to contact them.

Just email a request and then screen grab your email and put it onto your blog.  You only need to ask for permission for educational purposes for your A Level Media Studies coursework.  You do not need to evidence the reply, although it would be great if you do get one!

How you are marked for your coursework

The coursework unit at A2 is marked out of a total of 100 marks:

20 marks for the planning and research and its presentation;
60 marks for the construction of your actual products (music video, website and digipac);
20 marks for the evaluation.

In the evaluation the following four questions must be addressed:
  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

You need to have a rough cut of your music video completed by Thursday 11th February, in order that you can use half term for any mop up shoots.

It is very important that you show your rough cut to as many people as possible so that you can make changes reflecting feedback in order to answer Question 3.

Exam board advice: "How to Create an Animatic"

How do I create an animatic?

1. draw storyboard frames- nice and bold, black pen if possible
2. take individual photos of each frame
3. upload the photos to the computer
4. import the photos into the edit programme
5. drop each image onto the timeline and cut to the required length
6. put music or other sound on the audio timeline
7. add titles or effects/transitions as required
8. export to quicktime and upload to youtube or vimeo
9. embed the video onto the blog or save it to a CD

Remember: examiners reward use of media technology to evidence your research and planning.  Animatics are the best way to show off your storyboard.

Audience Research for your artist

Buy a music magazine which features articles/adverts about artists in your chosen genre.

Analyse an advert or article for the representations made about the artist which you can then use for your website/digipack research.

Now look at how how the magazine writes about its reader in their Media Pack.
This should help you have a more detailed understanding of how to write about the audience for your artist.

Here's Q magazine's media pack.

Audience Research

In the video link below Jerry Goolsby, professor of Music Industry Studies at Loyola University, tells a bit about how a band goes about finding its target market, and the importance of that audience in a band's career.

Embed this blog into your coursework blog and reflect upon how this has helped you in terms of considering the audience for your artist/band.
